The Virtual Lab

Confused about when to use less and fewer? Doubt if informations is a count or non-count noun? Unsure when to use a semicolon? Bewildered by comma rules? Feeling stuck in your writing project?

The Academic Writing Resource Lab (AWRL) maintains a virtual lab for writers needing online help about their questions regarding any aspects grammar, punctuation, formatting, sentence structure, research, genre, documentation, usage, or style. Writers can briefly consult the AWRL instructor via Skype to locate resources and get quick answers to pesky academic writing difficulties.

Who will consult me about my writing?

The instructor and AWRL tutor is an experienced language teacher and native speaker who has training in the teaching of academic writing. Using a reference library of materials, manuals, style books, and handbooks as well as online resources, the instructor can help you locate accurate and useful writing tools.

When and where is the virtual lab?

The AWRL virtual lab is everywhere that you might be when you are on-line on Thursdays from 14:00 - 16:00.

How can I access the virtual lab?

You can reach the virtual lab via skype by adding the skype username "utwrites" to your list of contacts. You can send your questions or concerns by starting a chat conversation or making a phone call. During this time you might share an online document, look at a resource, or simply ask a question about a particular aspect of your writing.

What do I need in order to participate?

If you are not already a user, you'll need to download the program for Skype and create your own account. You can find more information by visiting the Skype website.

My schedule does not allow me to participate during the virtual hours. What can I do?

Send an email to the instructor to request a one-on-one tutorial or visit AWRL drop-in hours.

Is there anything that the virtual lab cannot help me with?

Due to time and staff constraints, the instructor cannot read and respond to whole documents over email or Skype, so questions need to be specific and focused. AWRL is does not offer proofreading services. Although the instructor will not "fix" grammar mistakes for you, she will happily answer questions about grammar so you can find and fix your own errors. In addition, while the instructor gladly offers advice on a variety of writing issues, she will not do your writing for you.
