Some Powerpoint Tips

Don’t give PowerPoint center stage

Your visual aids ARE NOT the focus

Create a logical flow

Not a collection of bulleted lists

Make your presentation readable

  • If people can’t read my slides from the back of the room, my type is too small!
  • Use at least 30 point font
  • The more words you use, the less readable your slides are
  • Avoid paragraphs or long blocks of text
  • Use appropriate fonts (a sans serif font like Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, etc. for titles and a serif font like Times New Roman, Garamond, etc. for body text)
  • Avoid detailed reports
  • Avoid “title capitalization” unless it is a title

Remember, less is more

  • The rule of KISS: Keep it simple, stupid!
  • Avoid too many fancy transitions
  • Avoid sound effects
  • Cut down on the number of slides (it should not be a transcript!)

Distribute a handout

  • Useful for taking notes and helpful in keeping your audience’s focus on the presentation
  • A good back up plan in case technology fails

Practice giving your presentation and using your slides
