Seminars on Language Development And Intercultural Teaching

Seminars on Language Development and Intercultural Teaching are for academic teaching faculty at the University of Tartu who are interested in developing fluency and accuracy in their English language skills, particularly as those skills relate to their academic teaching or work environments. Each seminar is a stand-alone workshop designed to focus on a specific element of learning or teaching. The content strives to highlight aspects of excellence in higher education teaching; however, the seminars will be conducted in English and have a dual focus on the language-related skills necessary for success in the participants’ international academic environment. Participants may choose attend one, a few, or all of the seminars listed below. Pre-registration for the seminars is required and space will be reserved for those who respond first.

Seminar Topics

The Multicultural Classroom looks at issues of cross-cultural communication and cultural differences in the multi-cultural or international university setting, and helps participants identify potential problem areas and develop strategies for dealing with these issues. The seminar will also take up specific strategies and suggestions for working with non-native speakers of English. Sample assignments and links to additional resources will also be included. (Pre-registration deadline: February 14, 2007)

Developing Pedagogic Tools in English is aimed at assisting lecturers in producing high-quality and accurate teaching aids. This hands-on seminar will look at effective use of handouts, PowerPoint, and other visuals; participants will actively work to produce and share their own materials at the culmination of this seminar. (Pre-registration deadline: February 28, 2007)

Becoming a Better Language Learner discusses strategies successful adult language learners use, and how these strategies can be used to get the most out of language learning resources and work-related interactions in English. (Pre-registration deadline: March 14, 2007)

Critical Listening assists participants in using authentic materials (video or actual lectures) to develop both their own academic fluency and their ability to understand implied as well as literal meaning. (Pre-registration deadline: March 28, 2007)

Active Learning during Lectures focuses on simple ways to enhance the content of your lectures with creative and communicative practices to capture student attention and improve student learning. (Pre-registration deadline: April 11, 2007)

Giving Student Evaluation and Feedback focuses on giving students comprehensible feedback on their work and course progress. The seminar will cover the language of effective feedback and different formats for giving feedback to students. During the session, participants will also practice giving and receiving evaluative commentary. (Pre-registration deadline May 2, 2007)

Hallway Talk helps participants focus on the concise language and cultural fluency necessary to simplify technical topics in their fields for a broad variety of audiences as well as discuss their place in the academic environment and what makes their position/research unique. (Pre-registration deadline: May 9, 2007)

Pronunciation for Advanced Speakers is intended for advanced speakers and focuses on the crucial features of pronunciation such as stress, intonation, speed and rhythm that can help participants be more comprehensible in English. (Pre-registration deadline May 9, 2007)
