Some important rules and considerations about the the Academic Writing Resource Lab (AWRL) at UT
AWRL can help faculty writers with many problematic aspects of academic writing in English
Writers might visit AWRL for drop-in hours, the virtual lab, or workshops
- to consult with a trained writing instructor
- to focus on particular areas or aspects of a piece of writing that the author has highlighted
- to concentrate on issues that surface in writing, ranging from larger, rhetorical concerns—organization, evidence and support for particular argumentation, syntheses of ideas—to more local grammatical concerns
- to read others' writing critically and offer feedback
- to talk about your writing and discuss ideas and strategies for writing
- to analyze published writing and become aware of successful/unsuccessful writing techniques
- to ask specific questions about troubling aspects of writing in a foreign language
- to become aware of resources available for academic writers
- to learn new strategies for becoming more effective autonomous writers in English
- to gain insight into your own work
- to network with other academic faculty writing or working in English
AWRL cannot proofread or edit your work for you
The instructor will not edit or "fix" a paper for writing lab visitors. However, the lab may be used for working on a piece of writing at any point in the writing process, asking questions, grammar/punctuation/documentation help, discussing a problem, locating resources, or looking at examples of other published texts.
AWRL cannot work with texts that are not your own
Although writers and the instructor may read other texts for the purposes of analysis or comparison, the instructor will only consult the writer about his/her own texts. The instructor will not consult with someone about a colleague's, student's, or friend's writing.
AWRL cannot guarantee your consultation if you come late
Participants not showing up for a pre-scheduled tutorial or consultation forfeit their session and must reschedule for a later date.
