PLAD Discussion Questions

Participant-Led Academic Discussion (PLAD)

Before your discussion day:

  1. Sign up for a date and topic. Your topic should be something that you would like to know more about and something you think would be good discussion generator for your classmates.
  2. Get a copy of your article or book chapter from Jennifer (you can find a list of the reading selections in your course syllabus). As you read it, think about ways you can present and share the material with your classmates. If inspired, locate additional resources or artifacts related to your topic.
  3. One week before your PLAD, please post a list of discussion questions about your article on the course website.

On the day that you are leading the discussion:

  1. Introduce the topic
  2. Provide necessary or additional background information. You can assume that your classmates have already done their reading as a springboard for the discussion.
  3. Incorporate support materials (e.g. a handout, a question to be answered, etc.
  4. Lead the discussion questions using a creative classroom task.
  5. Close the discussion

Time Limit:

Please be sure to stay within the time limit. The introduction and presentation should last no more than 10-15 minutes; the majority of your time should be spent in discussion with your peers. The total time limit for your pair presentation should not exceed 45minutes.
