Tartu Language Teachers Group

Language teaching can be exhilarating and creative. It can also sometimes be quite challenging and a bit lonely in the confines of our own classrooms. This group's purpose is to amplify the excitement and expertise of language teachers by opening the doors to our classrooms!

Round table meetings agenda

Who is this group intended for?

Teachers of foreign and second languages in Tartu. Although the languages of instruction and our student audiences may differ, we share many things in common in our practices of teaching.

Why meet?

  • to collaborate and socialize with other teachers in Tartu
  • to learn from a variety of contexts and experiences
  • to share resources (books, websites, programs, techniques, seminars)
  • to expand knowledge and repertoire of teaching and learning languages
  • to engage in in-classroom or out-of-classroom projects together
  • to celebrate languages and language teaching

How will we spend our time?

We can negotiate the topics we spend time sharing and discussing during our first meeting. In addition to the social aim of meeting to get to know one another and perhaps share a cup of coffee, we might also use our time together to talk about professional issues. Each meeting might focus on a different area of discussion. Some potential topics might include the following:

  • Working with corpora in the classroom
  • Digital resources and tools
  • Challenges of ESP or CLIL/CBI teaching in higher education
  • Using podcasts as a teaching tool
  • Action Research
  • Teaching vocabulary
  • Self-access learning
  • Collaborative learning
  • Finding good audio to use in class and how to work with it

When and how long will the meetings last?

Roundtable discussions about teaching/learning will take place on a monthly basis for 1-2 hours. Our meetings will generally be on the last Monday of each month. Check the agenda for a list of dates and topics.

Who is convening or moderating the group?

Jennifer Uhler is an English Language Fellow from the University of Tartu. Please don't hesitate to contact Jennifer with your thoughts, questions, suggestions, or comments.
