- be concrete and specific
- be constructive
- give strategies for learning and improving
- focus on moving forward
- provide objective commentary and evidence for assertions
- strike a balance between praise and criticism
- focus on content as well as smaller items
- not nit-pick
- be personalized
- be private when negative and public when positive
- be timely
