English For Academic Teaching Purposes

University of Tartu, Estonia

Spring 2007

Group A

Group B

Course Description:
The primary goal of this language course is to provide university teaching staff with numerous opportunities to develop effective communication skills in English in academic settings. Focusing on lecturing, observation, feedback, and academic oral communication will help participants develop both the robust fluency and culturally appropriate teaching skills needed in working with international students and building confidence in spoken academic English. In addition, participants will meet individually with the instructor for classroom visits and videotaped lessons to review their language and teaching performances. Individual consultations will be included as a form of instructional support as well as part of the process of developing long-term self-improvement study plans for continued learning. Class time will be spent examining authentic language in context, particularly as it applies to participants’ experiences as English-speaking lecturers in the Estonian academic community.
