Assignments EATP2 Fall 2007

English for Academic Teaching Purposes: Continuation Course

Weekly Grammar/Vocabulary Exercises: You will be given an exercise focusing on either grammar or vocabulary at the end of each lesson. These exercises are to help you amplify your knowledge of a wide variety of words as well as solidify your grammatical knowledge and improve accuracy.

Dictionary on Disk (DOD): As a group, we will compile a dictionary of new words, expressions, and phrases that we encounter through our in-class interactions. For each week of class meetings, a different member of the class will be asked to record new vocabulary items, find definitions, and post the day’s vocabulary file to the course website by sending the entry to ee.tu|relhu#ee.tu|relhu. Regularly-scheduled quizzes and activities will help make these words and phrases a permanent part of your vocabulary study.

Listening Summaries: We will share our out-of-class listening experiences with those in class (Oct. 31 & Dec. 5). Independently, you will listen to one radio or television program available on-line in English (a list will be made available on the course website). Orally, you will summarize the program for the benefit of sharing the opportunity with your classmates, and we will create a collective list of recommended listening based on your experiences.

Lecturette: You will be required to prepare a 15 minute lecturette on a topic of your choice, preferably relating to your area of expertise, followed by a short discussion period. You should consider this assignment a good litmus test of your ability to convey the main ideas of your field to a wider educated audience. You may use PowerPoint or other visual aids in conjunction with your mini-lecture. Your lecturette will be digitally recorded so that you can later analyze your performance. After reviewing and reflecting on the process, you will make an individual appointment to meet and discuss your lecturette with the instructor.

Peer Feedback: As a listener, you will be required to fill out feedback forms for lecturettes. This feedback is a chance for you to listen actively to the presentation and acquire a critical stance towards teaching practice, as well as help your colleagues to improve and excel.
